"My paintings are an outgrowth of many moments spent living with nature, and observing her in her most pensive and poetic moods. In exploring the countryside I have found that although Mother Nature offers many splendid views, they are seldom perfect. Working mainly from memory, I use intuition and suggestion to edit what is actually there while retaining the character and atmosphere of the place. Starting with oil washes and a general idea of the subject and mood I wish to portray, I allow the canvas to dictate the direction of the painting as it emerges through many layers of paint and glazes. The viewer may feel a sense of peace and atmosphere, or a sense of drama, and an appreciation for the seductiveness and permanence of the landscape. Through this process I invite the viewer to draw on his own experience to decide what he is feeling and seeing." - Jill Garity
